17 November: SCIT takes part in VI St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum

SCIT has traditionally taken part in organizing a festival as part of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. We hope that this year’s festival, Russian Heteroglossia, enriched the Forum program with its round table discussion and a translation concert. The festival opened with the Living Word: Russian Heteroglossia round table discussion, where the issues of increasing translation from the national languages of the peoples of Russia, and the mediating role of the Russian language were brought to public attention. The round table was moderated by Sergey Filatov, a renowned political and cultural figure, member of the International Academy of Creative Endeavours, and President of the Socio-economic and Intellectual Programs Fund. Mr Filatov has paid a lot of attention recently to developing translation from the ethnic languages of Russia into Russian, and holds training seminars in Moscow. The participants discussed such issues as: Does translation play a part in preserving cultural heritage? What is to be done to help save indigenous languages? Do we need to translate literary masterpieces into Russia’s ethnic languages? What is the role of the Russian language in supporting Russia’s other languages?

Among the participants were such distinguished scholars as Nina. Zaitseva, who painstakingly collected the endangered Veps language in the book of the epic Virantanas. Yana Novikova from St. Petersburg State University spoke about the Izhor language, Farid Akhmadiev from Ufa posed the question of the future of the Bashkir language. SCIT director Irina Alexeeva reported on the Yakut Literature in Russian seminar she held in Yakutia.

The event continued with the translation concert, Amidst the Languages. This concert has become a tradition, and this time the ethnic languages of Russia became the focus of attention. Translators from Veps, Karelian, Bashkir, Yiddish, as well as from Slavic (Bulgarian, Czech, Polish) and Scandinavian (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch) presented their new work. The thematic variety was impressive: from the historic ship logbooks of Willem Barentsz, to the Swedish Academy of Magic Creatures.

4-8 July 2016: SCIT-UN seminar Russian for Interpreters of International Organizations

From 4 to 8 July 2016, St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation held a seminar Russian for Interpreters of International Organizations. Eight interpreters from UNHQ, UNOG and UNOV spent five busy days at SCIT discussing with their Russian colleagues, SCIT trainers, lexical solutions and semantics of the Russian public policy discourse. Both SCIT trainers and UN interpreters considered this format useful and suggested organizing such seminars in the future.

4-8 April 2016: Workshop ‘Teaching I&T Effectively’

On 4 – 8 April 2016, SCIT held a Teaching I&T Effectively workshop for the university teachers of translation and interpretation. The participants came from Belgorod, ivanovo, Omsk and Vladivostok. Over the five days of the seminar the participants had master-classes on the SCIT methodology of teaching translation and interpreting, attended interpreting classes with SCIT students, took part in the Q&A round table where Director Irina Alexeeva and other SCIT trainers took questions. According to the feedback from the workshop participants, there is a need for more specialized events in a I&T trainings for trainers format.

SCIT holds Translation Feast: Tradition and Modernity round table on fringes of St. Petersburg Cultural Forum

On 14 December 2015, as a fringe event of the IV St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum, the St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation organized a special event – a round table entitled Translation Feast: Tradition and Modernity. With the Year of Literature in Russia coming to its finale, this event brought together translation scholars and practitioners, including leading literary translators of Western, Oriental, and Slavonic literature. The round table provided an excellent opportunity for the discussion of the place and the role of literary translation in today’s Russian culture, providing a glimpse of the best examples of the art of translation. Theorists discussed the role of literary translation in contemporary Russian culture, and practitioners gave a recital of their latest translations. They definitely succeeded in delivering to their audience the music and imagery of languages as diverse as Arabic, Japanese, Slovenian, Mongolian, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian, Georgian, and Norwegian, among others.

The round table attracted many Herzen University students and faculty, as well as other guests with an interest in literature and foreign cultures. It demonstrated that the best Russian translations extend the geographical reach and lifespan of the masterpieces of world literature. Translations also make understanding possible between distant cultural traditions, and allow for the creation of a favourable environment for the development of Russian culture itself.
