A series of master classes by Vladimir Faekov has launched the MFA program of pedagogical assistance to the School. A legend in his own right, personal interpreter of Prime Minister Kosygin,  intrepid creator of the in-house MFA courses for interpreters, author of well-known dictionaries for interpreters, a man of wide horizons and a virtuoso-teacher, Vladimir Faekov won the audience from the first minute. Teachers and guests &#8211; Herzen students from the Department of Interpreting and Translation &#8211; participating in this unique event, held their breath to catch every word of the speaker. The experience was worth every minute of it. Firstly, the students worked for three hours non-stop to get to know how it feels to be an interpreter during long negotiations. Among many other things they learned what and how much an interpreter should eat and drink. Next, the participants were invited to a competitive practice with Vladimir Yakovlevich to test their reactions, crucial for successful interpretation. And guess what? Our sporty and athletically-looking guest won every round! The idea was to provide a flash answer to questions like &#8220;What is a track?&#8221;, or find synonyms to English words, comment on historic examlpes and so on. In short, agitated and charged with a fighting spirit future interpreters worked a miracle: upon hearing a whipping command: &#8220;You will do it, if you want it!&#8221; they caught their breath and started to interpret from English into Russian for real!<br \/>\nAfter just three days the students felt transformed. Now they  knew why a phrase like &#8220;It was a cool statement, Mr President!&#8221; was a no-go in conference interpreting, and what was wrong about brown shoes, and that there were situations when your heart ached for your country. The most important thing was that the meeting indicated the direction of the training process, or, using Mr Faekov&#8217;s own words, it cast light on the subject and purpose of learning. A meeting ith the staff of the School at the end of the visit showed that our approaches to  training interpreters were very similar.
