On 1 – 2 November the Herzen University hosted the V International Conference on Quality and
\nQualifications in Translation and Interpreting. This Conference is an annual event held in one
\nof the universities of countries of the Baltic basin. Yves Gambier (Turku, Finland), an authority
\nin translation theory and a practical translator was the founding father of this conference. It
\nhas several years of history and is held under the sponsorship of BSRUN. The format of the
\nconference is unique: it is not a scientific forum, but rather a methodological workshop where
\neach speaker shares his private experience and feeds an animated professional discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first day of the conference took place in the Hall of Arms of the University. Prof.
\nAlexander Kruglov, Director of the Institute of International Relations at Herzen, addressed
\nthe Conference with a welcoming speech followed by presentations by Yves Gambier, Ursula
\nPaulini, representative and Director of the DG SCIC of the European Commission, Prof.
\nAndrey Chuzhakin. In her presentation Ms Paulini told the Conference about the activities of
\nInterpretation Services in the EC. The second day of the conference took place in the conference
\nroom of the School.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participating in the Conference were trainers from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland. Russia
\nwas represented by trainers from Veliki Nogorod, Kaliningrad, Moscow, Ekaterinburg.
\nDirector Irina Alexeeva, Deputy Director Angelique Antonova, trainers Sergey Afonin,
\nEkaterina Shutova made presentations on training practices at the St Petersburg School of
\nConference Interpreting and Translation. Sergey Yakovlev held a mock-conference in training
\ninterpreting for a broad audience of trainers and graduates.<\/span><\/p>\n
