On March 26 the School of Conference Interpreting and Translation hosted a Round Table Discussion on Translation and Interpreting issues. The event was organized by the UTR St. Petersburg Regional Branch, the \u201cPro Verbum\u201d center and the St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation. The participants enthusiastically discussed the forthcoming national conference \u201cTranslation Forum Russia 2011\u201d which is to take place in St. Petersburg in September. The Forum attracted interest, and the School trainers expressed willingness to take an active part in it, especially now that the problems of translation quality control, translation standards and the forming principles of the translation industry require broad discussion and balanced decisions. The Forum will offer such opportunities as about ten open discussions are scheduled to take place.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following part of the meeting was dedicated to the UTR project of translators competency assessment which aroused a heated debate. The project was presented by our Moscow guest, member of the UTR Board E. Maslovsky. The speeches by S. Afonin and D. Tishin generated most feedback as both of them argued that the assessment criteria need thorough revision. The speakers stressed the importance of criteria being transparent and trustworthy among the translators community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next the role of the UTR in building the translation industry was discussed, and the issue of trust was carried further on. Both positive and critical appraisal of the UTR work was given, all of which, however, was designed to improve the function of the organization which translators would like to see as their defender representative organization. In the evening, in an atmosphere of the informal social intercourse after eight hours of strenuous work the colleagues arrived at the conclusion: they should meet more often!<\/span><\/p>\n
