Мастерская перевода в Пушкинских Горах

7 October 2011|

From August 27 to September 2, VI German-Russian translation workshop took place in Pushkinskie Gory. It was an important event in the field of literary translation. The project is in its tenth year. Following a rigorous selection process, six German and six Russian translators, including both well-reputed translators and novices, visit alternately Germany and Russia and spend a week of discussions on challenging literary texts currently being translated. Last year the workshop took place in translation center in Straelen (Germany), and a year before – in Yasnaya Polyana (Russia). Natural beauty and proximity to the places where Pushkin’s genius thrived created an aura of special meaning around translators’ work. Along with the works of such classics as Arthur Schitzler, Elias Canetti, Teffy, Andrey Bitov, the translators discussed the subtleties of translating the works of contemporary authors. The project is coordinated by Kristiana Kerner from the German side and Irina Alexeeva from the Russian side.

St Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation continues networking with Russian universities. In June 2011 School Director Irina Alexeeva visited the Astrakhan University which hosted a traditional Summer School for interpreters and translators organized by the Russian Union of Translators and headed by its president L. Gurevich. There were heated discussions about the state of literary translation in Russia, about the importance and quality of training interpreters, about translators’ certification and other issues. Marco Benedetti, Director General of the SCIC, presented a report about the perspectives of interpreting and translation in Europe and in the world. Astrakhan University develops modern Master’s programmes in interpreting and translation in European and Oriental languages, such as Pushtu, Uzbek, Kazakh and others. Summer heat, at times reaching 43 degrees Celsius, did not disrupt serious discussion of these issues. Seeing strong centers of interpreting and translator training emerging in the regions, and a spirit of collegiality among the budding interpreting and translation industry is encouraging indeed.

Мир перевода без границ: серия видеоконференций с Еврокомиссией и Европарламентом

27 June 2011|

For two years already the School has had video conferences with the language support services of the European Commission and the European Parliament. The experience was successful. The first conference in the current academic season took place on March 28, and the last – on June 16. The students had a unique chance to interpret into English or French under a watchful eye of experienced interpreters, native speakers of the language. The School trainers and European interpreters delivered speeches in turns, and the students interpreted them consecutively and simultaneously. A favourable atmosphere of discussions and the wide international audience helped to boost confidence of the young interpreters and to cope with the stress of speaking in public. From the European side, Vesselina Zaitseva, Sylvian Liberman and Liam Long acted as permanent experts, and the School is grateful to them for their efforts in helping to train a new generation of professional interpreters with the Russian language. Video conferences have become an integral part of the School’s education process since the training strategy is based on the “scenario” principle, a close simulation of real working environment.  Mock conferences in interpretation are held for every language every week.

On Saturday, May 28, Professor Liang held a mock conference in simultaneous interpretation for the students of the Chinese language on a subject matter that does not easily lend itself to interpretation: treasures of the Hermitage. Yet, the students fared pretty well in rendering from and into Chinese. Masterpieces of visual and applied art discussed in the reports were laid out on the interactive board in the classroom. The quality of the interpretation was assessed by our honorable guest from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China – Consul for Trade and Economic Affairs, Mr Zhang Hai Tao, who is also an experienced interpreter himself. Mr Zhang Hai Tao appreciated the quality of the simultaneous interpretation of all students and praised the efforts in training interpreters with the Chinese language, specially noting the innovative methodology developed by Professor Liang.
