SCIT celebrates the Diplomat’s Day

On 11 February a reception to celebrate the Diplomat’s Day took place in the Marble Palace, St. Petersburg. The representatives of diplomatic services, general consulates and the Government of St. Petersburg were invited to the reception. The MFA Office in St. Petersburg is a long-standing partner of Herzen University. Vladimir Zapevalov, MFA Representative in St. Petersburg, and the MFA Office in St. Petersburg took an active part in launching and developing the St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation. 20 SCIT graduates have been employed with the MFA of Russia over the past years.

The MFA Office in St. Petersburg recognized the achievements of Herzen University and its Rector Gennady Bordovsky (1986 – 2011) in promoting international cooperation. In 2009 Rector Bordovsky was awarded the Alexander Gorchakov Silver Medal “For the efforts in strengthening Russian sovereignty and unfailing service to the country” in recognition of his efforts in launching the St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation. In 2018 Director Irina Alexeeva and Deputy Director Angelique Antonova were awarded the Contribution Medal from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to mark the 10th SCIT anniversary.

The ceremony in the Marble Palace was attended by Gennady Bordovsky, President of Herzen University, Yulia Komarova, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Director Irina Alexeeva and Deputy Director Angelique Antonova.

Master classes with the author of Die Scanner

On April 15, the SCIT Conference Room was the venue for a creative workshop on literary translation. It was attended by SCIT students and participants of the Goethe Institute translation seminar led by Marina Koreneva. The event was a great success. It was moderated jointly by Martin Schaeuble, author of the sensational novel Die Scanner, his translator Tatiana Zborovskaya (Moscow), and SCIT Director Irina Alexeeva. The participants discussed issues related to translating newly coined words, youth slang, and the reasons for public liking for dystopia in literature and on stage. The event was planned jointly by SCIT and Goethe Institute for the Week of Germany in St. Petersburg.

Applied research workshop Teaching I&T Effectively

On 4 – 8 April 2016, SCIT held a Teaching I&T Effectively workshop for the university teachers of translation and interpretation from different regions of Russia, from Belgorod to Vladivostok. Over the five days of the seminar the participants learned about the SCIT approach to teaching translation and interpreting, attended interpreting classes with SCIT students, took part in the Q&A round table where Director Irina Alexeeva and other SCIT trainers took questions. According to the feedback from the workshop participants, what they appreciated most was a direct engagement with the SCIT trainers, who are also practicing interpreters, and a focus on practical issues of I&T training. The participants also valued highly the trainers’ professionalism and commitment to sharing experience and good practices. They expressed their desire to come again for more specialized events in a I&T trainings for trainers format.

Videoconference with DG INTE, European Parliament

On 1 April 2016 SCIT held a videoconference with DG INTE, European Parliament. The objective of the conference was to practice students’ retour. SCIT trainers acted as speakers and European experts assessed the accuracy and delivery of students’ performances. The range of topics varied from the role of flowers in human life to doping in sport. All students coped with the challenge and received useful feedback from the European colleagues.

Lecture by Natalya Sokolovskaya

On 30 March, Herzen University hosted Natalya Sokolovskaya, writer, translator, and literary editor. She authored several volumes of prose: Slave of Belles Lettres: Days of Work and LeisureThe Standard of Love, View from Mont Blanc, Portraying God; books of poetry: Nature of Light, Unsealed Letters, Angels Forever, and translated poetry from the Georgian language. Natalya Sokolovskaya initiated a series of important literary projects in Russia: she designed and led a joint Russian-Georgian project “Shota Rustaveli’s poem The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” (published by Bilingva, 2007, 2015); authored the project “Olga: Forbidden Diary” dedicated to Olga Berggolts (St. Petersburg, 2010) and the project “I will live till old age, till the day of glory… Boris Kornilov” (St. Petersburg, 2012); she edited the complete war-time diaries of Olga Berggolts (St. Petersburg, 2015).

The Conference Hall of Herzen University was full; the lecture was attended by the students and lecturers from the Institute of Foreign Languages, SCIT students and trainers. For students, such meetings are more than a cultural event, they give a glimpse of what professional life has in store for future linguists and translators. SCIT and Herzen’s IFL are planning similar joint events aimed at educating the youth in the spirit of respect for the native language, profound understanding of our history and culture.

Engaged in translation when a student. Wrote her graduation paper (“Demon” by Mikhail Yu. Lermontov in German translations”) and PhD thesis dedicated to bilingualism in the worksy Carolina Pavlova under the supervision of a well-known theorist and practician of translation and interpretation Andrey V. Fyodorov.

At the end of the 70ies worked as a translator in the Patent bureau of the Leningrad State University. Teaching at the Leningrad State University (now St Petersburg State University) since 1980.

In the 80ies and 90ies specialized in the legal, economic, memoir and literary translation. Among translations published in the 80ies, 90ies and the beginning of the XXI c. there are works of J. L. Tieck, E.-T.-A. Hoffmann, G.Keller, G.Hauptmann, G.Trakl, H.Hesse, H.Broch, R.Musil, H.Böll, R.Menasse, I.Tielsch, P.Nison, E.Jelinek and many others. In 2006 published “A Complete Collection of Letters by W. A. Mozart” (together with her former student A. V. Boyarkina) and translated most of the letters.

Since mid 90ies also engaged in consecutive and simultaneous interpretation (in particular, at conferences and forums Petersburg Dialogue – 2003, Christain Service in Hospitals – 1999, Modern Legal Protection of Information Sources – 2004, etc.). Since 1980 has been teaching practice and theory of translation and interpretation. Since the end of the 90ies has published a number of books on the theory of translation and interpretation and methods of translators and interpreters training, including: «Теория перевода» («Translatology») 1998; «Профессиональный тренинг переводчика» («Professional Training of Interpreters/Translators») 2000, «Устный перевод. Немецкий язык» («Interpretation. The German Language») 2002, «Введение в переводоведение» 2004 (Introduction into Translatology), «Устный перевод речей» («Interpretation of Speeches») 2005, «Письменный перевод. Немецкий язык» («Translation. The German Language») 2006, «Текст и перевод» («The Text and Its Traslation/Interpretation») 2008 – all in Russian. Author of more than a hundred research papers.

Since 2000 has been conducting workshops on organisation of education in the field of interpretation/translation and the methods of interpreters/translators training in Russia and other countries. In 2004 awarded an Honorary Diploma of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.

Since 2017 has been appointed as Director of the Strategic Centre for T&I Trainig in the Russian Academy of Education.

Angelique Antonova

Deputy Director

She graduated from Herzen University in 1997, majoring in Philology. Simultaneously she obtained a major in Global Economics from the St. Petersburg State University. She began to practice translation and inter-cultural communication during her student years. She earned her Ph.D. with a dissertation on Russian Orthodox Church terminology in original English texts and dictionaries, which she developed under the supervision of Prof. Victor Kabakchi, a recognized expert on inter-cultural communication. She has taught at Herzen University since 1997. She has authored over 45 papers on inter-cultural communication and translation and edited a number of joint publications on the training of translators and interpreters. Angelique Antonova also has experience working as an in-house and freelance translator, interpreter and editor with Russian, English, and German. In 2008, she followed her passion for developing young talent and became Deputy Director of the St. Petersburg School of Interpreting and Translation at Herzen University. In the period of 2017 – 2021 she was also Deputy Head of the Strategic Centre for the Promotion of Translator and Interpreter Training, Russian Academy of Education.
